Authors: Alhouseini, Mahmoud; Saaideh, Mohammed
Abstract: In recent years, social media has emerged as a powerful force in contemporary global politics, transforming the way people engagewith political actors and consume information about political events. While the potential benefits of social media are many, includingincreased citizen empowerment and democratic participation, its drawbacks cannot be ignored. The spread of misinformation, theerosion of trust in political institutions, and the manipulation of public opinion are among the challenges posed by social media. Thisarticle delves into the complex and multi-dimensional impacts of social media on global politics, emphasizing the need for criticalexamination and the development of policies that promote democratic values and civic participation. It highlights the significance ofunderstanding how social media is used in both democratic and authoritarian societies. Authoritarian regimes exploit social media tocontrol information, suppress dissent, and propagate their agendas. The article provides valuable insights into the opportunities andchallenges of social media for democracy, human rights, and global security. Policymakers, academics, and citizens alike must engagein ongoing research to fully understand the implications of social media on contemporary global politics.
