CHANGING POWER RELATIONS IN PALESTINIAN CIVIL SOCIETY UNDER THE ISRAELI OCCUPATION

Title: CHANGING POWER RELATIONS IN PALESTINIAN CIVIL SOCIETY UNDER THE ISRAELI OCCUPATION
Authors: Abu Zaher, Nadia; Alqubaj, Sameh
Abstract: This study aims to identify the development of power relations in Palestinian civil society. The
study adopted the ‘power cube’ approach that illustrates power relations in the public sphere. The
study relied primarily on the interview as a tool for gathering information, especially from leaders of
the popular committees, participants in the first intifada, and civil society professionals. The study
concluded that Palestinian civil society's power relations were changing and evolving through various
political stages that affected it in light of its subjugation under the Israeli occupation.
Power relations in civil society during the pre-Oslo stage were "parallel" to the occupying power;
because the role of civil society was positive to compensate for the role of the absent Palestinian
Authority, and its most prominent components were the popular committees. During the post-Oslo
stage, the power relations in the civil society were "confrontational" relations with the Palestinian
Authority, due to its opposition to many of its actions. The Popular Committees, its most prominent
components, disappeared and were replaced by non-governmental organizations, which were funded
from abroad serving foreign agendas so their positive role essentially declined. Post-division between
Hamas and Fateh phase, power relations in civil society were characterized by "Domination"; as civil
society was dominated by each of Gaza’s authority, and by Ramallah’s authority. The role of civil
society in this regard has become at its most vulnerable

VIRTUAL REALITY AS AN INNOVATIVE AND IMMERSIVE LEARNING TOOLS FOR HEIS IN PALESTINE

Title: VIRTUAL REALITY AS AN INNOVATIVE AND IMMERSIVE LEARNING TOOLS FOR HEIS IN PALESTINE
Authors: Alqubaj, sameh;
Abstract: Education and technology are an interconnected. While education has not changed for years in terms of applied teaching approaches and techniques, we are witnessing a continuous innovation in terms of instructional technologies, ICT infrastructure, and the delivery methods related to education.

The article presents the project TESLA - Virtual Reality as an Innovative and Immersive Learning Tool for HEIs in Palestine, supported by European Commission under the programme Capacity building in the field of higher education. The TESLA project originated from a critical need or challenge to provide a solution for some taught courses where not only traditional learning is considered to be obsolete but also the current used technology is not sufficient to offer the optimal quality of teaching/training for a certain category of courses where the human perception and immersion are two master components for learning. The idea grew up when other Palestinian HEIs join the initiative launched by Al-Istiqlal University to develop a collective virtual reality component, giving it more depth and more challenges to overcome, especially that each university has already its own courses, vision, and objectives.

Authors: القبج, سامح; Alqubaj،Sameh
Abstract:

Title: Turkish foreign policies determinants toward Palestinian issue under the rule of Justice and Development Party (2002–2015)
Authors:
Alqubaj،Sameh
Abstract: The study aimed at identifying the determinants, premises and the milestones of the Turkish Foreign Policy under the rule of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP) toward the Palestinian issue. The study sought to unveil the basics and foundations of this new Turkish foreign policy, which the AKP depends on. The researcher investigated historically the Turkish foreign policy toward the Palestinian issue in the last era. It has established a kind of relative compatibility with the neighborhood and the world on many foreign policy issues, which all are characteristics that granted Turkey the possibility of establishing and implementing active and influential policies. The Palestinian issue with all its intricate and barbed nature is the best entrance of AKP Turkey to take a regional and international place. The Palestinian issue is considered the entrance of AKP Turkey to the “Islamic World.” At the end of the study, the researcher recommended that the Palestinian politicians benefit from the Turkish foreign policy under the rule of the AKP. It is through this policy that Turkey occupies a distinctive regional role through mediating between the disputing parties and exploits this role and its acceptance by the international community in supporting the Palestinian issue.
